What is a Knox-Box?
A Knox-Box is a key box that looks like a small safe. The Knox Box mounts on the wall of your home or business to store entry devices such as keys and key cards, that give firefighters access to your structure. Knox-Boxes are constructed of ¼" solid steel with a ½" steel door and reinforced locking mechanism. They are UL listed against physical attack and the Medeco security lock is patented and UL listed for drill, pick and pull resistance.
Why have a Knox-Box?
A Knox-Box can prevent the owner from having to respond to their home or business at inconvenient times. Also, in case of an emergency, it gives firefighters a safe and easy way to access your structure. This will reduce property damage should the fire department need to gain entry.
How the Knox-Box Works?
There is a Sentra-lok master key retention system on all of our engines, as well as the Chief's vehicle. This key must be released through the fire dispatch center using a series of secured tones. The dispatch center records the time the key was released and the officer requesting the release. The master key can then be removed from our apparatus, and will open the Knox-Box on your structure. This allows us entry to your building, and once we have completed our investigation, your entry key is returned to the Knox Box. We then replace our master key in the Sentra-Lok retention system. This is also documented through the dispatch center. Our master keys are unique to the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company, and there are no others like it.
